The show starts off with a cover of Henley & Hornsby's song “End of the Innocence.” This is the very first song and Woody forgot to put his capo on his guitar, the good news is that we caught it on the first chord. Click here for this performance.

You can fast forward to about the 11:30 mark to start the show. Corky has been around the Portland radio and jingle scene for many years, writing and producing scores of jingles. He told us that he had been thinking of who to get to do his new jingle for Grover Electric & Plumbing, who have retail stores all over the Pacific Northwest. Then he thought, who do I know that are already used to singing and harmonizing together. Thank goodness he was already our fan. Their latest EP was written mostly over Zoom at the height of the pandemic. This collection of songs reflects both the difficult times and hopeful moments of that historic period.

It was initially released as singles in late 2022, with the full EP plus bonus track out in the spring of 2023. Produced by Dean Baskerville (Sheryl Crow, Pink Martini, Everclear), the sound is a sonic departure from prior releases. Jangly acoustic guitars and solid vocal harmonies are still present, but now electric guitars and strings flesh out the arrangements, with plenty of “ear candy” for those listening on headphones.

“River Flow” is a country rock anthem about letting go of life's expectations to be exactly where you are. “100 Pair of Wings” is a folk ballad that looks to birds as teachers and guides through our grief. “Girl in Hollywood” sees our dreams on the big screen and encourages us to go after them. “Land of Plenty” traces the difficult and momentous events of 2020. “Lovely Day” imagines the contours of a perfect day, when the pandemic was finally over and we could see each other’s faces again.

Brightwell & Moran’s unique blend of rock, country, folk and Americana can be heard throughout the EP, and sometimes all within a single song. Then it was a long recording day (almost 10 hours!) as we built the song from the ground up: recording the rough vocal and guitar scratch tracks, then percussion and bass, then keeper guitar tracks for Woody and me, then the mandolin and fiddle. Recording the keeper lead and backup vocals came last in the process.

There was a lovely canteen at Abbey Road, so we were able to have a proper meal during the day. And when we the session wrapped, we had a celebratory toast in the canteen courtyard. It was an amazing day. It had been almost two years since we were on a stage due to the pandemic. We got a phone call from our friends with the band Night Folk who wondered if we would like to split a performance date with them at Cafe Artichoke in Portland, OR... inside, but masked and vaxxed. As it turned out, we were just finishing the recording of a new EP (more on that later) and we thought it might be a good thing to actually play these new songs for some folks. The night of the show, doors opened and a flood of people came into the venue. People that showed up 20 minutes early were left hunting for seats! Night Folk opened with some really fun songs, I remember one about male strippers at a Dairy Queen, but that's another story. We played our new songs at the top of the set and even received a standing ovation on the song Land of Plenty. So it appears that we may be naming our new EP "Land of Plenty". A big thank you to Gary (video) and Michael (audio) for making us look and sound so good. And of course, thank you to the boys in Night Folk for the invitation!
Woody Morantag:woodymoran.com,2005:Post/64291872020-09-09T12:04:25-07:002022-04-05T12:12:19-07:00Radio Stranger in Art of the Protest Song
Radio Stranger was excited to join Beth Wood, Anna Tivel, Aireene Espiritu and host Bill Valenti on August 26th for the first viral performance of Art of the Protest Song. As usual, they started their session with a little chat about what was going on and their thoughts on various subjects. These preliminary chats almost always open a doorway for a new song and this occasion was no exception.

The subject was Trump and what the world would be like in 2020 after four years of his "leadership". As terrible as we envisioned it, we never imagined the reality: Family separations, imprisonment, and the deaths of immigrant children; Dismantling the pandemic response team and muzzling the CDC; Massive tax cuts for the rich and large corporations to the detriment of middle and lower income families as well as small business; Disregard of climate change; Coverup and corruption leading to his impeachment; Attacks on the news media as well as social media; The lies... so many lies every day of his presidency.

In America right now, we are weathering the perfect storm: political unrest meets social inequality meets climate change meets pandemic. This song is a call for us to wake up to the changes that are happening in real time, and act where we can to protect what we collectively hold dear -- before it's too late. Lots of cool sonic textures with Woody on acoustic guitar, Jeffrey Koch on electric guitar, Jean-Pierre Garau once again on Wurly, organ and accordion, Mr. Henchman on bass, with Donald Sulzer in the drum chair this time. Kelly's vocal on the bridge is so powerful. There is also a fun choir-like breakdown that almost got out of control but Michael managed to rein it in before it blew up on us. So we set up a time to get together and talk about it. Although we knew that Bryan was a musician and played a mean guitar, we were a little surprised when he showed up with his Breedlove acoustic. Bryan told us that he had been experimenting with an open tuning and wanted to show it to us, just in case we were inspired. The tuning was D-A-E-F#-A-E, and Bryan showed us some progressions and chord shapes that he had worked out using this tuning. Bryan was obviously in love with his wife Anne, and said that she reminded him of a museum of fine art. So, art, picnics at a local winery with their kids and friends became the basis of the song. Kelly asked the best question when she inquired if he had a pet name for Anne, and he told us yes... it's Annabelle.

We sort of looked at each other... (silence)... Well, I guess we're going to write a Christmas song. But it can't be cheesy. It can't be too lovey-dovey. No wise men or Jesus in the manger. It can't be a crooner song (at which point we both break into our best Frank Sinatra voices). Well what can it be about? Christmas Lights! Everyone loves Christmas Lights! So with no further ado, here it is... ta da!! "Christmas Lights" recorded live at a Cafe Artichoke Holiday Benefit Concert. Merry Christmas. Happy Holidays. One World, One Love.

Following the review of Brightwell & Moran's Radio Stranger Crosstalk EP by Music Connection magazine in November 2017, Music Connection has now selected them as one of the Best Unsigned Bands of 2017 in their 40th Anniversary, December 2017 issue. What an honor.
Thanks to Music Connection Magazine for their positive comments and encouragement on our new EP, Radio Stranger CROSSTALK. Music Connection's review of CROSSTALK appears in the November 2017 issue of the magazine. They absolutely loved Kelly Brightwell's vocals (well, who doesn't). We loved this line in the review, "Radio Stranger will appeal to grown-ups, with meaningful music that touches the heart and soul." MC wrapped up the review saying, "All in all, these seasoned players are captured by pristine production that enables Radio Stranger to deliver humanist messages." Sweet.

The inspiration for "Don't Judge Me" from the new Radio Stranger EP "Crosstalk" is from a real person who lives in Las Vegas that was questioning his own ethics and moral code. Re-examining the lyrics under the cold light of the recent Las Vegas mass shooting and the denial of our representatives to pass laws to help control guns feels like we were unintentionally prophetic. Check it out, lyrics and audio track at the link below. BTW, now IS the time to talk about gun control. This has got to stop.

Since Music Connection receives hundreds of submissions each week and they only chose 8-12 unsigned artists each month to review, it sorta feels like a pretty big deal just to get a review. Although focused on the Southern California music industry, they have become the industry "Bible" covering artists and events in other regions as well. I especially enjoyed this line of the Music Connection Magazine review. "Moran’s a relaxed, genial artist whose music conjures a kinder, gentler, friendlier world, one we can all experience, at least for a short while." As previously reported a new five song EP has been recorded at Rob Stroup's 8 Ball Studio and is currently being mastered by Ed Brooks at RFI Mastering in Seattle, WA. Kelly quickly rejected my idea of a selfie and brought in Miri and Darka from Mirifoto. It was a long session, partly because we kept coming up with cool photo ideas. Kelly and I played some songs to try and capture a little of the songwriting enthusiasm we share when writing together. This is a photo while we were goofing around with a few songs. After Miri and Darka had packed up and taken off, Kelly said, "I had no idea that smiling was such hard work."Woody Morantag:woodymoran.com,2005:Post/39356022015-11-25T15:25:26-08:002017-01-14T10:05:38-08:00The Spiritual Side of Recording an EPKelly Brightwell and I started writing songs together a little over a year ago. We get together about once a month and usually write a song each time we get together. "Okay, so what have you got?" has become our standard greeting for these sessions. So with about a dozen songs written, we decided we needed to record an EP of the best 4 or 5 co-written songs. I personally love the concept of the EP because from a spiritual side, it feels like you are always giving your best songs. There's no room for filler songs, only the best that we can offer at that moment.

Rob, Kelly, Woody at 8 Ball Studio

So we worked out the song arrangements and started recording scratch tracks of vocals & guitars over a couple of days in October with Rob Stroup at 8 Ball Studio. I had wanted to have the CD release for Sitting In Aztec Chairs at Portland’s famous acoustic venue, Café Artichoke. So I booked a date for March 2015, then I got an email that they would have to reschedule and I got pushed back to May. That was okay, the recording process was going a little slower than I had anticipated. Then I received a 2nd email that the date May date had been double booked and would I reschedule again, but the only date that fit my schedule was July 11th. Much later in the year than I wanted, but I took the date.

Then I started rounding up my band and one after the other the band members from the recording told me they already had other commitments. I called up keyboardist Dave Aston, who I had played with at several street fairs so he already knew a bunch of my songs, and he was available. I thought, well I’ll just go and do the gig with Dave. It will sound totally different than the album but that’s okay. Then my great friend Michael Henchman, who played bass on the project, phoned and told me that he would be available after all. Things were shaping up.

Then I got the word from Artichoke that the house sound engineer was not available and did I have someone that I could provide. I had worked with a wonderful sound engineer, Marty Gallagher, at the three street fairs I had played and gave him a call. Marty was could make the date.

I started looking for an opening act and again, I found that many of my musician friends already had commitments for that Saturday night or were out of town. Then I thought about inviting John Rankin to open for me. John had just returned from SxSW down in Austin, TX and had won some contest that had him opening for John Legend’s show. John told me that he was available, so I asked him if he would like to join me on stage for a couple of numbers on 2nd guitar. John said sure, then asked me if I would like a little violin on any of my tunes. “What? You play violin?” John told me that violin was actually his first instrument. Now the band was really taking shape.

So I started to promote the event, and wouldn’t you know it, pretty much all of my friends, neighbors, and even my dentist and the grocery store clerks were going to be out of town. Yes, I was getting desperate. Would there be anyone at the show?

The night of the show rolled around and the room started to fill; some friends, some family, and a lot of strangers. My promotion efforts had worked after all. John Rankin just killed it as the opening act; he was so good. Now it was my turn. The show came off as close to perfect as you can get. The band found a great groove on every song, even without a drummer. Marty played the sound board like an instrument, making sure that every instrument was fine tuned for every song and adding little reverb or delay “sweeteners” as well. Sure enough, it didn’t sound anything at all like the album, but it had a wonderful identity all its own.

Here is a video from the show titled, Light It Up. It was written with Phoebe Blume as a song of affirmation. However it seems to have been picked up locally as an anthem for the legalization of marijuana in Oregon. Hahaha, well whatever works.

Yes, I have guitar nails on my right hand. Yes, I was actually rehearsing. So, I went to my local nail shop where they know me by name because I am the only guy that ever comes in there, to get Molly to fix me up with new nails. Molly is a really cute 40-something divorced Vietnamese woman who is always happy and full of energy, but I could tell that something was wrong. I mentioned that I hadn't seen her since before Christmas and asked her about her kids and her holiday. "Oh... everything go okay," she said. "I have my dog. I have my children and we had a good time together. But now it is Valentine's holiday." Then out of nowhere Molly said, "I was married for 23 years, but my husband never give me flowers. 23 years and he never told me that he loved me," and a sob caught in her throat. She pushed back a tear, but didn't apologize for revealing her private thoughts. I tried to lighten the mood and with a little smile I told her that she had to be careful what she said in front of a songwriter because it could wind up in a song. She managed a weak smile and said "that's okay. It can be Molly's Valentine's Day Song."

You can feel the energy as the musicians play off of each other's performances. It's an all star lineup of local Portland, Oregon players including Jeff Anthony (Sheryl Crow) on drums, Jean-Pierre Garau on keyboards, Michael Henchman on bass, and Bob Dunham on electric guitars. We recorded all five songs in one long afternoon. The only over-dubs were JP's acoustic piano solo on Chasing Midnight and a real Hammond organ on Light It Up and producer Rob Stroub adding some extra percussion. Then Kelly Brightwell came into the studio and added her amazing backing vocals. It seems like everyone in Portland wants to get Kelly to sing on their recordings. Rob did a fantastic job engineering the performances, especially since there were so many "moving parts", and the mix stands up to repeated listenings, sounding close and intimate; like you are sitting in the middle of the band for the recording. I couldn't be happier with the final results. I hope you enjoy the songs.
